The idea was, by giving myself a something of a hobby to-do list, I'd actually get some hobbying done.

Or, at least, that I'd manage to accomplish more than I'd done the year before when I hadn't made a list.

Unfortunately, that list didn't do much to help me. In fact, that list was pretty much exactly this list. I'm sure that one can use the excuse that life got in the way, as life tends to find ways to do, but nonetheless it left me with quite a pile of stuff to sort, glue and paint and not a single bit of hobbying actually accomplished.

This year, however, I'd like to actually start completing some of the various hobby projects I've got laying around. I've got, literally, a room full of little plastic men (and women, beasts and armament if we want to be entirely inclusive) from various armies that I'd thought were good ideas at some point in time and they deserve to be assembled, converted, painted and see the field of battle.

In fact, I've also got some fields of battle that need to be painted and played on lest they feel neglected and unwanted and unloved, but I digress.

Therefore, be it resolved that I will complete all of the following armies -- in their entirety -- before I buy anything else.*

The Iron Men of the Mechanicum (1000pts.)
Yes, this army is Iron Man themed. No, I don't care if you don't like me mixing geek genres.

1x Magos Dominus (a 'Tony Stark-flavored' Ferrus Manus conversion)
6x Thallax
3x Castellax Battle Automata
3x Castellax Battle Automata

Additional units I've already purchased which can be used to expand this force: 3x Thallax, 5x Myrmidon Destructors (a unit of converted Iron Hands Gorgon Terminators), 1x Thanatar Siege Automata, and 1x Questoris Knight Magaera.

The Tau (500pts. / 750pts.)
I have a paint scheme in mind for this army, but no fluff because, well, I haven't dug that far into their background or whatnot. I've just always thought they looked cool.

1x Cadre Fireblade
{ 6x Fire Warriors}
3x XV8 Crisis Battlesuits
3x Stealth Shas'ui Battlesuits
1x Pirahna
2x Tetra
1x XV104 Broadside

Additional units I've already purchased which can be used to expand this force: 1x Pirahna (Forgeworld variant).

The Night Lords (750pts.)
This is a Vampire Counts-flavored version of the Night Lords. Think something along the lines of the Night Lords fleeing into the Warp, a chapter settling a dark, sunless planet and thereupon discovering that there are scarier things in the night than they themselves.

Before you protest, in W40K lore, there are such things as Vampires. Imagine what they could do if they managed to infiltrate a (fallen) legion of the Astartes ...

1x Chaos Lord with Jump Pack
20x Chaos Cultists
20x Chaos Cultists
5x Raptors / Warp Talons
6x Raptors / Warp Talons
1x Heldrake

Additional units I've already purchased which can be used to expand this force: 1x Knight Titan.

The Carcharadons Astra (1,500pts.)
This army is intended to be more fluffy than uber-competitive. That said, I'd still like it to kill things.

1x Tyberos the Red Wake
5x Assault Terminators
5x Assault Terminators
{ 5x Assault Terminators }
{ 5x Assault Terminators }
7x Scout Squad (Snipers)
5x Scout Squad (in transport with Shotguns)
5x Scout Squad (in transport with Shotguns)

Additional units I've already purchased which can be used to expand this force: 1x Contemptor Dreadnought, and 1x Leviathan Dreadnought.

Those are my first set of milestones.

Doing the math, there really aren't a large number of models there to paint though, obviously, some a larger significantly larger than others. With any sort of efficiency, I should easily be able to complete this in a matter of months. Not later than the end of April, I'm sure.

To get it to the standard I'd like them to be, however, and taking into account the fact that there will never be the sort of time I imagine there to be to actually complete this list, I'll double that estimate and say that I hope to have this done by the beginning of August.

So, what will I ever do to fill the rest of my year ... ?

Oh, there are things. But, I'll have to write about those more later.

(* - This 'no more buying' ban, obviously, does not include the units or individual bits necessary to complete those armies. As it is, for example, I'm actually about three units short of filling out those lists as they stand so the ban would not apply to those units. And, if inspiration strikes, I may throw the ban out entirely ... )Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7173545738489775135.post-87616675000420432362014-06-26T14:06:00.000-05:002014-06-26T14:06:01.168-05:00Slow progress is still progress.Shortly after my previous post about how much I intended to get done this month, we got some rather exciting family news this month that has side-lined most of my hobby pursuits while I work feverishly to turn our basement (also known locally as 'the dumping grounds for all of the clutter we didn't want to deal with properly') into a more fully livable space.

Best laid plans of mice and men and all that.

However, I am making some slow progress toward my goals. Pictures should be arriving shortly.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7173545738489775135.post-54518405754066199842014-06-02T10:00:00.000-05:002014-06-02T10:00:09.380-05:00On the table this month ...1) For the Carcharadons Astra: A Contemptor Dreadnought that is, when I'm done, going to be fully poseable. Like an action figure.

2) For the Nyam-Nyam Cannibals: A couple of witch doctor, one male and one female, as inspired by Diablo III.

3) For the Beast Kings of Ind: Some eclectic unit filler to go with a Dragon Warrior.

4) For the Ragewood of Hathelos: I've decided that the Dryads need a few finishing touches on the Dryads (a la "If you're going to San Francisco ...") before I feel like they're really 'done.' And I've found just the thing.

5) And, for the Elves of Tor Elithis: Maybe ninja or four.

I'm excited to clear this so that I can switch back to getting real units done. Like the Bestigors I've got waiting for some love and attention. Let's see how much I get done.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7173545738489775135.post-11612180407818555632014-05-29T10:00:00.000-05:002014-05-29T10:20:18.852-05:00Complete: Hrólfr, Lord of the Howling Wolves of Fenrir.Obviously, I don't have enough other projects to complete, so ...

Hrólfr is the Chaos Lord that will lead the Howling Wolves of Fenrir, a clan of Chaos warriors whose inspiration is drawn from Norse mythology. And wolves.

(More pictures -- and a lot of exposition -- after the jump ...)

The link between wolves and the cold, desolate North isn't new.

In Norse mythology, Fenrir was a giant wolf -- the son of Loki -- bond and chained by Odin, destined to grow so large that his upper jaws would reach the sky and his lower jaws would touch the Earth when he howled. He would bite off the hand of Týr, the god of law and heroic glory, and, during the events of Ragnarok, slay Odin himself.

In George R. R. Martin's 'A Song of Ice and Fire' novels, dire wolves are the sigil of House Stark. The children of patriarch Eddard Stark each share a bond with a dire wolf, a connection that is so strong that often their own fates are tied to those of their wolves.

And, dire wolves make appearances in other works, from the World of Warcraft games to the Chronicles of Narnia and from the Harry Potter novels to Doctor Who.

So, when developing the idea for this army, I knew that I wanted to incorporate the dire wolf.

Unfortunately, the Empire had already co-opted the idea with their White Wolves of Ulric, dedicated to the 'old god' of battle, of wolves and of winter.

Thus, I had to weave the two ideas together.

And, obviously, steal the 'god of wolves' idea back.

Fenrir is clearly Norse in origin, and the son of the Trickster God, Loki. Warhammer isn't an unfamiliar realm for Norse deities ('Tor' is the Kislevites' square-jawed warrior god of thunder, for example) and, after looking into the backgrounds and digging through as much information as I could find in the old Fantasy Role Play books, it would seem that Loki's closest analog would likely (and most obviously) be Tzeentch.

So, for army background purposes, Fenrir would be a 'son' of Tzeentch.

Worshippers of Fenrir would see Ulric as a bit of an interloper. I mean, if there is an actual god that isn't just a 'god of wolves' but is, you know, himself a giant wolf and if he isn't, then, following the so-called 'god of wolves' ... ? Well, the math seems pretty easy. And, for his part, Ulric (whose followers seem to get on well with the followers of Tor) could draw a pretty close parallel to Týr.

If one were willing to stretch a bit.

Which I am.
So, then, the Howling Wolves of Fenrir would be a Chaos clan, following a Wolf-like 'son' of Tzeentch, destined to eventually grow so large that he'd break the chains that had kept him bound, bite off the hand of the Ulric (read: Týr) and, then, destroy Sigmar himself (read: Odin).

Sounds reasonable, right?

Also, did I mention that there will be wolves?

Really.

Lots of wolves.

Regular wolves (to stand in as Hounds) and, then, people that turn into wolves (ForgeWorld Skin Wolves as, either, actual Skin Wolves or just unit fillers) and, obviously, giant wolves (40K Thunderwolves Cavalry mounts standing in for the Juggernauts for the Bloodcrushers to ride).

Because, you know ... wolves.

And, because it's an 'off-shoot' god of Chaos that they're following, I don't really have to be tied to a paint color.

So, I went with white.

Because, an almost all-white Chaos army, with pale skin and black hair and the occasional blue sprinkled in here and there sounded like a tremendous idea when I was rolling it around in my head.

So, you've read enough. Here are the pictures of Hrólfr ...

I feel like there are a lot of things that 'work' on this model, and a number of things that don't. Though I'm sure you can come up with your own, here's my own personal review ...

Good: First, this was my first real attempt at source lighting (in the crevasses between the rocks), and I think it came out really well.

Bad: The 'mystical ice' effect I was going for on the end of the spear isn't as eye-catching as I'd hoped it could be. It's not nearly so dark in person and I'd be half-tempted to re-do it (again) but, at this point, I'd painted and repainted and repainted and repainted it so many times that it is beginning to lose detail.

Good: The conversion work is very subtle and, I think, nearly unnoticeable which, to me, means that it was done well.

Bad: The back side of the cape, however, suffered a bit in the re-sculpting. However, that'll be mostly unseen when he's standing amongst his troops.

Good: The head tattoo. It's a microscript that, in English, his title as the current 'alpha' of his clan: 'Son of Fenrir.' And, when blown up large enough to actually see, the runic Elder Futhark reads:

You'll note the gap.

That's because these are the first ten cannibals in what will, eventually, be a horde of fifty. Those two spots represent the place where their leader, the Ghoul King, and their 'witch doctor,' the Necromancer, will stand.

However, because the way these models line up, they need to be rather precisely placed. So, this is where they are.

( More pictures and background on the origin of this army after the jump ... )

(Also, I've cleaned up the photos to eliminate some shadows and keep the colors 'true' to what you see when looking at these in person.)

Before I delve too deeply into the origins of this army, it should first be acknowledged that this is not an altogether original idea.

I first stumbled across the idea of a cannibalistic army based on the Vampire Counts when it was posted on The Herdstone as 'Legend of the Cannibals' by Garganthor. His work was brilliant and I knew, immediately, that I'd need to someday find a way to make something like it.

So, before I ever set out to do this 'proof of concept' paint up of a small unit, I already sort of knew how it would work visually. (And, more importantly, I already knew that it could work visually.)

However, his was more 'voodoo' oriented and, thus, had a more Caribbean feel than what I'd want.

To me, the 'Caribbean' of the Warhammer world is populated by Elves with pointy helms that wouldn't be particularly happy about finding an enclave of vampires and cannibals in their isles and would dispatch them rather quickly.

So, as that didn't work for me, I began doing some research into where an army like this could reasonably fit into the established Warhammer world.

After a bit of research on the internet, reading the history of the Vampire Counts in their army book and, also, perusing the 'Time of Legends' Warhammer novels, I found that there was a point in time, early into the origins of Vampires, that Neferata (Queen of Lahmia, the first Lahmian Vampire) and her cousin, Ushoran (the first of the Strigoi Vampires) went to war alongside Nagash against King Alcadizaar and his Priest Kings of Nehekhara.

As Nehekhara is Egypt, this put them in the Southlands.

So, that worked.

The Vampire Counts army book tells what happened further along in that story.

After the Vampires failed to destroy Alcadizaar, they returned to Nagash and, following a struggle for power and in the wake of Nagash's wrath, the Vampires dispersed 'in all directions to confuse pursuit ... thus, the first Vampires disappeared across the world, each founding their own bloodthirsty dynasty that would endure and grow through the centuries, terrorizing the living to the present day.'

We already know the story of those that would eventually wind up in the Old World.

But, what of those that fled south ... ? Perhaps this army could tell one of their stories.

So, while the idea was taking shape, I decided to also take a look at tribes within Africa that may (or may not, depending on the sources of your information) have participated in real, actual cannibalism. One of the most prevalent, I found, was the Niam-Niam (or, rather, the Azande tribe of the Sudan).

From Wikipedia:

The word Azande means the people who possess much land, and refers to their history as conquering warriors.

There are many variant spellings of Azande, including: Zande, Zandeh, A-Zandeh, Sandeh, etc.

The name Niam-Niam (or Nyam-Nyam) was frequently used by
foreigners to refer to the Azande in the 19th and early 20th century.
This name is probably of Dinka origin, and means great eaters in that language (as well as being an onomatopoeia),
supposedly referring to cannibalistic propensities. This name for the
Azande was in use by other tribes in South Sudan, and later adopted by
westerners. Today the name Niam-Niam is considered pejorative.

That seems like a reasonable fit.

However, because I <strike>like</strike> love the onomatopoeia of the 'Nyam-Nyam' name, I decided to keep it.

Frankly, I imagine there to be little more terrifying, even in the Warhammer world, than a horde of ghouls all murmuring 'nyam-nyam' (think: "yum! yum!") as they scurry toward you with the fresh flesh of your compatriots dangling from their teeth.

So, I took a part of someone else's brilliant army idea, plucked it from where he'd set it and plopped it down into the Warhammer setting I found more appropriate and, then, painted over it with some real-world historical context and, I think, have a pretty solid foundation for a new army.

This weekend, my eleven-year-old son took the allowance he'd been saving up and some extra money he'd earned mowing lawns and moving bricks down to our friendly, local comic and game shop and purchased his first* big Warhammer model: the new Treeman Ancient kit.

After flipping through the pages of the new White Dwarf, he also decided that he didn't want his Treeman to be just a regular, ordinary Treeman.

So, with a hobby knife, a bit of Zap-a-Gap superglue (I contend, the best superglue available on the market) and a vision of what he wanted, we sat down and spent Sunday afternoon creating this ...
I'll admit, I wasn't particularly keen on the new Treeman kit when I first saw pictures of it. But, now, after seeing it in person and getting to play with all of its components a bit, I'm kind of jealous that he has one and I don't.

Oh, well. At least I'll get to help him paint it up ...

This model was chosen because Games Workshop had, to that point, failed to produce a treeman or, even, a treekin in their Warhammer Fantasy line that looked anything at all like, you know, an actual tree. And, since the idea behind the Ragewood -- at least, in my head -- is that they can 'disappear' into the forest of Athel Loren and become indistinguishable from actual trees until such time as they're needed to fight, I needed a treeman that actually looked like he could potentially do that.
Obviously, he's still in need of a base. As I'm having trouble settling on what to do there, I figure I'll just work that bit out when I've finished the rest of the army so that they'll all get the same base treatments at the same time. But, his paint is done so, for now, so is he.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7173545738489775135.post-54196219721344629532014-04-29T09:15:00.000-05:002014-05-01T09:21:13.072-05:00GW News: New Wood Elves RevealedSome enterprising young folks on the internets (specifically, over at Grim Dark Realms) have managed to find pictures of the new Wood Elf releases before GamesWorkshop officially made them available to the public.

I've seen some criticisms, but I've got to say that there is some really beautiful stuff here. And, despite running an exclusively Forest Spirit army, I'd rather have most of these new Elf figures than the new Treeman kit they've released ...

(Pictures after the jump.)
First up, the Eternal Guard kit which is a dual-kit used for both the Eternal Guard and the Wildwood Rangers.

(I'm really liking this kit, and I'm thinking I may actually use it for my High Elves' Shadow Warriors.)

Are the tiger-themed Beast Kings of Ind completed? Well, no. Not just yet.

Are the samurai Elves of Tor Elithis all converted and painted up? No. Not yet.

What about the forest spirits in the Ragewood of Hathelos, then? Not quite, no ...

But I guess, technically, the Ragewood are closer than anyone else. I've got three units of twelve Dryads and a Treeman (a beautiful, characterful Lord of the Rings Ent) almost ready for a coat of protective varnish.

(Pictures coming soon.)

And, I've got ideas for a 'Wolves of Fenrir' Warriors of Chaos army.

And, also, an all-Ghoul Vampire Counts army from the deepest dark of Southlands.

Plus, in addition to all of those armies that still need
completion, I've got a couple units of Forgeworld Tartaros-armoured
Space Marines incoming that will be the beginnings of a Carcharadons
Astra chapter.

Because, you know, I need more stuff to paint. And, a new game to play.

Luckily, I've recently begun a new work schedule which allows me to work from home several days each week which, in turn, allows me to grab a brush and some paint pots while I'm sitting in on conference calls -- you know, instead of just doodling ideas for new armies on notepads, like I'd be doing if I were actually sitting in a conference room.

So, I think I've actually got a chance to get some things done now (and, you know, annoy my wife with hobby clutter in the living room).

The Domain of the Geek begins anew. Stay tuned.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7173545738489775135.post-73252774643641597352013-04-22T09:00:00.000-05:002013-04-22T10:28:01.172-05:00GW News: New High Elves RevealedOver the weekend, pictures of the new High Elf models began leaking across the internets.

These Tablescapes are 'an injection molded plastic 12x12" tile set designed to give tabletop gamers themed gaming environments that are fully compatible with new and existing terrain and basing options from Secret Weapon Miniatures.'

From what they've posted on their Facebook page, it sounds like they're also mindful of making these compatible with Games Workshop's 'Realm of Battle' tiles -- at a fraction of the cost.

They are initially offering "Scrap Yard" tiles, which don't really fit the fantasy environment (large rubber tires will be hard to explain in the deep, dark Drakwald forest), but their stretch will include themed tiles like "Urban Streets," "'Generic' Fields," "Ruined Temple," "Trench Works," "Lost Desert" and more.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7173545738489775135.post-77931426719887141142013-04-11T13:30:00.000-05:002013-04-11T16:12:57.806-05:00Rumors of Warhammer: High Elves. There appears to be news breaking on European blogs this afternoon with more details of what to expect from the upcoming High Elves release for Warhammer Fantasy. As a guy who is in the midst of converting a High Elf army (you know, alongside my other vast, unfinished Warhammer armies and projects), I'm a bit excited to see what's coming ...

The original source of today's rumors -- to be sure the right blog gets credit, even if similar rumors have appeared elsewhere previously -- seems to be L'Astropate. They write:

NEW MODELS (from MORE likely to LESS likely):
1. BOX/KIT: Flying Chariot Sky Talons. Special character on it
(Finubar/Eltharion) an option for RBT/flamethrower-dragon breath war
machine.
2. BOX/KIT: Phoenix/Phoenix Riders. Options for Special Character (Caradryan?), two/three types of Phoenix (Ice/Fire/Lone one).
3. BOX/KIT: Infantry: 10 Shadow Warriors/Maiden Guard (Some say they will be in two boxes and not in a multikit).
4. BOX/KIT: Monstrous Cavalry "Fire Riders" (dragons)
5. BOX/KIT: Huge Dragon/Monster. Option for Imrik.
6. BOX/KIT: New War Machine (as the one in the flying chariot option B)
7. BOX/KIT: Great Eagles.
8. BOX/KIT: Two elven gods shrines.

BLISTERS (some to be seen in May, others in the future, others never). From MORE likely to LESS likely:
1. BLISTER Warrior Mage (some say with option to build Belannaer)
2. BLISTER Alarielle
3. BLISTER Teclis
4. BLISTER Random hero

Since today is April 11, will not be long before you get the images that [will] begin to confirm or deny anything.

I love that they list the blisters as "some to be seen in May, others in the future, others never." Which ones will be seen 'never' and, if they are never to be seen, why include them at all?

But, I digress ...

As for what should be expected once the new Army book arrives, Faeit 212 has compiled the following rumors from around the internet. I've tried to snip them, organize them and clean them up a bit as, frankly, the post about it on Faeit 212 was a bit hard to decipher (and, yes, this may be just as hard to decipher but, at the least, I've got things grouped into sections that make a little more sense to me):

This is the latest Compilation, just remember that these are still rumors.
Almost exactly a year ago ....
"I know they are not really on anyone's radar .... but ...
... I am pretty sure that High Elves are the next army after WoC ...
... So that puts them somewhere around 12 months away." (Harry, 25th March 2012)

Is it time to do the dance?

High Elves:
Release Date: Unknown (Presumably Spring 2013)
The next army to be done after the Warriors of Chaos release.(Harry)
This would make them sometime early next year. (Harry)
High Elves early next year. (Meltedwing)
I said it first. (Harry)
I won't say how I know but I can say that the next army book will be High Elves. (Ozguard battlehammer on Bugman's Forum)

Author: Unknown.
The book is rumoured to have been started. (Harry)
Adam Troke was asking about what folks wanted from the next High Elves book. Could be nothing. Could be he taking another swing at High Elves. This is a possibility as I heard Adam moved from his job on the web team back to games development about a year ago. I assumed this was Lord of the Rings related but it could just as easily been because High Elves were back on the menu. (Ghorros on The Herdstone)
Cruddace was not the HE designer, and a team would be working in all three elven races at once. (Spanish forums via Nopuiiidorl)

Rules:
Imrik making a return, his inclusion possibly acting like Skrag but for True Dragon Princes. (This ties in with the popularity of the Caledor novels depicting mass dragon combat, the Storm of Magic novella, AND the Graham McNeil 2 part novel.) (Actuality)

Silver Helms, Tiranoc chariot, Ellyrian Reavers and shadow warriors are moving to core. (wamphyri101 on ulthuan.net)
Shadow warriors becoming BS5 (keeping WS5) and have additional hand weapon. loss of hatred though bar vs dark elves (wamphyri101 on ulthuan.net)
Were getting War lions as a special choice (same as storm of magic but maybe 14pts, +2 for vanguard). (wamphyri101 from ulthuan.net)
Lion Chariot moving to 100pts. (wamphyri101 on ulthuan.net)
Rare Phoenix model like out of storm of magic. might be more like a unit buffer. something like an alter/Anvil. (wamphyri101 on ulthuan.net)
Dragons becoming cheaper or stronger. T8 Star dragon with 8 wounds. (wamphyri101 on ulthuan.net)
ASF is probably staying the same but some units reduced in prince to compensate its lack of use (like a mage) (wamphyri101 on ulthuan.net)
+1 to dispel staying the same (wamphyri101 on ulthuan.net)
Drain magic will become out signature spell (wamphyri101 on ulthuan.net)
Shield of Saph can be buffed to cover all units in 12” (wamphyri101 on ulthuan.net)
Monstrous Cav will be in the book…but nothing on whether its giant lions or Drakes. (wamphyri101 on ulthuan.net)
NO flying chariot (wamphyri101 on ulthuan.net)
Teclis to become even better…but points to go up a lot to price him out of 2500pt games (wamphyri101 on ulthuan.net)
Lords and heroes being able able to take things like lion cloaks. (wamphyri101 on ulthuan.net)

Not only is his flying chariot rumour accurate but it is pulled by Eagles. (Hastings)

I will add that I heard that the chariot has a special character option. (No big surprise there) can't remember where I heard this. (Harry)

Belannaer may return. (Spanish forums via Nopuiiidorl)
There will be new model to Imrik in a huge dragon (Caledor Dragon?), according to rumors. (Spanish forums via Nopuiiidorl)
Hastings' flying chariot do exist, but may not be pulled by eagles. (Spanish forums via Nopuiiidorl)
There will be a shrine/anvil (similar to Luminarch / Hurricanum) of two known elven gods. (Spanish forums via Nopuiiidorl)
Some buffs could be magical attacks/flaming attacks/ASF. (Spanish forums via Nopuiiidorl)
ASF will be lost as rule army-wide (Harry said that already). This would mean a slight point decrease on miniatures. (Spanish forums via Nopuiiidorl)
A less likely rumor talks that there will be a "Caledor dragon", apart from current dragons. (Spanish forums via Nopuiiidorl)
SMs may have a path-choice attacks (+1 to hit/KB/ward save...), lions being slightly more focused in monster-killing; lion pelt would protect
also in CC. (Spanish forums via Nopuiiidorl)
Plus: intrigues at court coming back (maybe different from 6ed), no valor of ages (probably changed into a new rule). There will be a new racial rule shared by all elves (we are discussing if this could be something related to elven swiftness). (Spanish forums via Nopuiiidorl)
There will be more core units (probably four or five slots), and more rare slots (probably three to five slots). (Spanish forums via Nopuiiidorl)

Flying Phoenix's (Frost and Fire) that can drop flame templates on units they fly over. Gets abilities based on what is rolled on winds of magic (Ozguard battlehammer on Bugman's Forum)
Great Eagle towing chariots (Which can have bolt throwers on them) (Ozguard battlehammer on Bugman's Forum)
New Highmage of Hoeth (Swordmaster / mage) Gets every signature from all 8 lores. (Ozguard battlehammer on Bugman's Forum)
Martial Prowess across the board (Ozguard battlehammer on Bugman's Forum)
Archer units with magical bows (Ozguard battlehammer on Bugman's Forum)
Swordmasters get a parry save vs shooting (Ozguard battlehammer on Bugman's Forum)Silver Helms as Core (Ozguard battlehammer on Bugman's Forum)

HE are going to get a new war machine that mixes RBT and dragon breath / flamethrower. Nobody told Maelström if its something independent or part of one of the flying chariots. He thinks that maybe a new war machine. (Maelström)
Some people now say there will be no MC, so maybe no dragons. Others, instead, keep saying there will be and they give very explicit details. Maelström is confident they can be one of the releases, since if they exist not there will be few new boxes and having two different infantry boxes is both unlikely and unnecessary. He will keep digging to see what he finds. (Maelström)
Next magic items disappear as you know them nowadays: Star Lance, Dragon Horn, Armor of Caledor (=Imrik coming back?). (Maelström)
There is a new magic item: Book of the Phoenix. (Maelström)
Dragons have awaken. More and more powerful dragons. Imrik is coming back. (Maelström)
Phoenix King is going to battle. (Maelström)

Models:
There has been a suggestion that there will be a flying Chariot. (Hastings)
Monstrous Cavalry (Skeith on BoLS)
The monstrous cavalry are a form of lesser wingless dragon, akin to the demigryph. (Actuality)
Dragon Princes riding some form of true dragon, (possibly limited to a sun dragon) Possibly in sets of three. (Actuality)
This reminds me of a rumour from last time the book was done. There was a rumour of 'Drake riders' being sculpted by Alex Hedstrom. (Harry)
Both High Elves and Wood Elves may get the rumoured Treeman in their
updated books. (buzz0783)
This does not seem very likely to me. (Harry)
A new Everqueen sculpt coming possibly riding some kind of 'critter'. No mention of Maiden Guard. (Eldargal UPDATE: Now doubting the credibility of this source)
Plastic kit for archers, spearmen and seaguard all in one box. (Bramgaunt)

Dragon MC will be modelled taking Thaindon's dragon as inspiration (that elf dragon rider from the 3rd edition). Like current HE plastic dragon (which takes inspiration from a very old GW dragon). (Spanish forums via Nopuiiidorl)
Do not expect to see spears/LSG core units in may. The rumor holds
truth, but that belongs to a further miniature wave. "Silver boys" coming later on too. (Spanish forums via Nopuiiidorl)
Apparently there will be new miniatures for Teclis and another "plastic mage (Belannaer we hope)". (Spanish forums via Nopuiiidorl)

I can confirm the flying chariot. It looks like a tiny boat with wings, and is pulled by a single giant eagle. It looks kind of silly in my opinion, but not much that can be done about that. (Best_Pone)
As for the phoenix, it can be made up either as a fire phoenix or an ice phoenix. This one at least look pretty cool (or hot, depending on the option you choose I guess ) (Best_Pone)

Everqueen (Ozguard battlehammer on Bugman's Forum)
New Shadow Warrior Models (Ozguard battlehammer on Bugman's Forum)
Maelström's left apart some things that we are not likely to see in years such us SHs, Spears, SMs, New Griffon and the like. He insists on saying that new release will be: 4-5 boxes and 3-4 blisters, plus book and cards. No surprises (we already know almost everything about that very point).(Maelström)

Miscellaneous Bits
The White Dwarf battle report is vs Ogres. (Ozguard battlehammer on Bugman's Forum)
It will be WHFB 30th anniversary, and elves are an army that needs something flashy that we haven't seen yet (as happened with Empire), and there may be a surprise. (Faeit 212)

Whether or not any of this is true, there are a lot of rumors that seem to be lining up with each other. We should know for sure by the time the new White Dwarf arrives on April 27th.
Congrats to my eldest son, Jacob, on winning his Pinewood Derby last night.

Not only was he the top finisher in the Boys division, he also won the Overall -- by, literally, on hundredth of a second -- and finished the night undefeated. He has a couple of nice, new trophies to add to his shelf.

( With that concluded, we now return to our regularly scheduled Warhammer hobby ... )

For the past two weeks, I've put away the sculpting tools and Green Stuff and stepped away from the Warhammer world to test my skills in engineering, to build the fastest 5oz. wooden car possible.
Thankfully, the time for the race is fast approaching and, tomorrow night, we can sweep up the saw dust and put away the plastic wheels and sandpaper and tungsten weights for another season.
Originally, I'd intended to simply use the Beloved of Sobek minis from Crocodile Games' Wargods of Aegyptus line but ran into several issues shortly in:

First, they're metal which makes modifying them nearly impossible and I'm dead set on not having 'duplicate' figures in my army. This would mean either much Dremeling or much recasting and I'm not a big fan of either of those options.

Second, they're expensive. Collecting them in the number I'd need would quickly get cost-prohibitive.

Third, even after putting in the work and the money, I'd never get them onto the pages of White Dwarf or into a Games Workshop tournament. And, though they'd let me use them at the local gaming venue without any issues, being excluded from those two things is still a consideration.

(What do you mean I'll never get into White Dwarf ... ?!)

So, with those things in mind, I opted to go with the sculpting and conversion route.

Several hours later, here's what I've come up with so far ...
As always, I look forward to hearing your feedback!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7173545738489775135.post-79799522745591813812013-03-18T09:00:00.000-05:002013-03-21T10:30:15.104-05:00The Return of the Geek. While the intermission probably has extended beyond what I'm legitimately able to call 'brief,' I think that the dust around our house has finally settled to the point that I'm able to get back into hobbying with some semblance of regularity.

There will still be interruptions here and there for house projects and honey-do lists and such, but I think that, with a bit of luck, we can now officially return to our regularly scheduled programming ...Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7173545738489775135.post-81334135788222430352012-04-11T09:13:00.001-05:002012-04-11T09:13:11.899-05:00A brief intermission. As you may have noticed, the second post about the building of Centigor has yet to appear.

The reasons for that are thus:

First, my son has a Pinewood Derby coming up this weekend and, as a result, most of what I would have spent as 'hobby time' has been dedicated to the sweet, sweet science of building the fastest wooden car possible.

And, second, we've recently found out that we've been selected for the adoptive placement of a little boy whose awesomeness is only matched by the awesomeness of the little boy we've already got. So, any free time that hasn't been spent getting ready for the Pinewood Derby has been spent driving to visits with this new little boy and, you know, trying to get his room ready so that he'll have somewhere to sleep.

So, please excuse our brief intermission. The Domain of the Geek will return as soon as possible. In the meanwhile, be sure to visit the excellent hobby blogs on our blogroll to the right.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7173545738489775135.post-79827674057484168682012-03-29T09:00:00.000-05:002014-04-28T10:17:52.160-05:00How to Build a (Male) Centigor, Part One: The Bits RequiredSo, you want to build yourself some centigor? Well, you've come to the right place.

While there are a lot of tutorials out there for building a Centigor, I've decided that, rather than simply showing you pictures of what I'm building, it might be beneficial for those of you out there who might be trying to do something similar yourselves to walk you through the steps I undertake in the process.

Let's start at the beginning with assembling the necessary bits.

(But, you know, I wouldn't advise trying to get them from Bits and Kits.)

Before I started building my centigor, I scoured the internet for ideas. Sure, they are based on centaur and the general idea of a centaur is pretty consistently the upper half of a man attached to a horse's body roughly where the horse's head and neck would be, but the implementation of such an idea can vary widely and there are always ideas better that your own to be <strike>pilfered</strike> borrowed from if you're willing spend enough time looking for them.

(And, obviously, you're willing to do so elsewise why would you be reading this brilliant article?)

For the males, I settled on a design similar to the Uuka character sheet on the right, but replacing Uuka's feline features with those human and equine features where appropriate.

I quickly decided that I would have both male and female centigor in my units. The males would be large, bulky beasts built on the bodies of warhorses. The females ... well, the females will be covered in another article.

Another thing to consider is that, while the centigor are armored, they are not heavily armored (either in the Beastmen army book or in the picture I'm attempting to emulate). That fact cuts down on the potential horse choices a bit. Empire and Chaos Knights' horses both wear significant plate armor, for example, and most of the Bretonnian and Elvish horses wear at least some amount of barding.

So, like many others before me, I eventually settled on horses from the Chaos Marauder Horsemen as my base.

One of the things to consider when kit-bashing miniatures is consistency.

While you may have the models handy for a simpler or cheaper conversion, for the purposes of consistency, the human bodies that would go on these powerful steeds would need to be equally large and powerful. A 'normal,' average human or elf-sized body simply doesn't fit the aesthetic. To some degree, I'd even argue that a Gor body appears too small to fit with the Marauder horses.

No, this torso needs to have long, smooth, powerful musculature. Something not likely to be found on a human miniature at all (at least, not on the scale we're looking for).

With that in mind, I selected the bodies of Orc Boar Boyz for the male centigor.

The arms need to fit with the Orc-ish musculature. Whether you opt to have them armored or not is up to you, of course, but for the design I am trying to implement, they needed to be as bare as possible. So, I opted for the arms of Savage Orcs.

(GW was brilliant in making those kits interchangable, by the way, so you'll have no trouble getting your Orc-y arms and bodies to fit together if you decide to follow the design I'm laying out.)

For the hands, we have to consider our options based on what's available to the centigor in the army book as well as what you actually plan on fielding as your unit. In my case, I'll be going with spears and shields.

While there are many options for these available and a number that might be good based upon the overall look and feel that you're going for with your army, I've elected to go with the spear hands of the Chaos Marauder Horsemen, and one of their shields as well (my units will be tied together visually by carrying shields that not only are painted the same color, but have the same iconography).

The heads I've chosen are, similarly, from the Chaos Marauder Horsemen (are you sensing a theme?).

Both they heads and the hands are, aesthetically, a bit smaller than what I'd really like -- particularly after the extensive discussion earlier about visual consistency -- but we'll be disguising that with some creative sculpting.

We'll also be adding some smaller bits -- knives and blades and spikes and such -- to their armor (don't worry, I'll discuss the reasoning behind it when we get there), so you'll want to pick some of that up as well. I found what I needed in the Chaos Knight's blades bits and and assortment of large and small spikes from the Dark Eldar Raider vehicle sprue.

So, there's your shopping list.

Go grab your bits -- either by raiding your bits box or hitting up the online bits retailers (again, not recommending Bits and Kits) -- and meet me back here next week for our next installment and we'll start to put it all together.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7173545738489775135.post-38411493760721899582012-03-27T12:00:00.000-05:002012-03-27T12:00:07.709-05:00Bitz Site Review: BitsandKits.co.ukAs nearly every one of my projects involves a lot of conversion work, I tend to buy a lot of bits. A lot of bits. As in, I spend more on bits than I'd care to think about and far more than I'm comfortable admitting to my wife.

Because of that, I tend to look for the best deals and the best dealers.

As lots of small businesses survive on word of mouth, if I find them, I'd like to share them with you. It helps them by keeping them in business and it helps me by having them still in business (no, they don't pay me commission to talk about them or slide me free bits on the side or anything).

As most of my experiences with bits sites have been positive, most of my reviews will be positive.

This is not one of those reviews.

Let me preface this by saying that I've done a lot of business with Bits and Kits. After quickly searching my email inbox, I've got a dozen order confirmation emails from them dating back to 2010. Those orders totalled nearly £150 in business, not including shipping costs.

At current conversion rates, I've spent enough money at their store to purchase three battalion boxes worth of Warhammer figures. Enough to, literally, buy a not-so-small army.

The reason(s) I kept returning to their site is simple: They have a great selection. They keep up to date with the newest releases. Their prices are usually the 'floor' rate. And, unlike some sites, they usually have the bits I'm looking for in stock.

Sounds like this should be a positive review, then, right?

Well, it would have been. But, two months ago, it all went south.

I'm not normally one to air their dirty laundry in the public domain of the internet. If a fast food restaurant misses part of my order, for example, I'm content to simple not return to their establishment without ranting and raving to my friends about the fries they'd forgotten or writing a scathing review on Yelp. Frankly, I've got better things to do and my time is more valuable than that.

However, as the online Warhammer community is a rather close-knit group and I expect that there will be others who may have had, are having, or will have similar experiences with Mark Howard and his site, I've decided to post what happened with my most recent order as a cautionary tale to those who may be considering ordering from him.

I placed my most recent order on February 1st, 2012.

I paid for it via PayPal, and PayPal confirmed that my eCheck payment was deposited into Mark Howard's account on Feb 6, 2012.

And, as I had previously, I waited patiently for my order to arrive.

Only, it didn't arrive.

Three weeks after my payment was deposited and in reply to the order confirmation I'd been sent, on February 27th, I sent Mark Howard the following email:

Can you give me an update on the status of this order?

It still shows as 'PayPal status: Pending echeck @ 08:08:25 Feb 01, 2012 PST' on your site but, according to PayPal, 'Your eCheck payment was deposited into the recipient's account on Feb 6, 2012.'

I've yet to receive it.

Thanks,

Jacin

Pleasant enough, right?

I sent the exact same message through the 'Contact' form on their website.

And then, after waiting patiently for three weeks to receive my bits, I waited patiently for a reply to my email.

None came.

On March 2nd, one month after my order was initially placed and five business days after my first email, I again sent Mark Howard an email:

Following up.

I've tried contacting you via email and via your website. Any update on the status of my order?

Thanks.

Still pleasant, I think, though at this point, I'm starting to get worried about his lack of reply. I also CC'd the address that he uses for accepting PayPal payments on this message and that message bounced.

So, lacking other alternatives and running out of time to file a PayPal dispute should it come to that, I go ahead and file one. It reads:

Your site still shows as 'PayPal status: Pending echeck @ 08:08:25 Feb 01, 2012 PST' on your site but, according to PayPal, 'Your eCheck payment was deposited into the recipient's account on Feb 6, 2012.'

I've yet to receive them, but I would still really, really like to have these bits.

I've tried contacting you via email and via your website to find out the status of my order, but I haven't gotten a response from you so I'm using the only other method I can find.

Please let me know what's going on with my order.

Thanks!

I follow up with similar messages again, through both his site and email. And, thinking that, surely, this will kick Mark into gear, I again sit back and wait patiently for a response.

None comes.

Another week passes and, on March 9th, I send another message through PayPal. It reads:

Mark, I've attempted to contact you, now, four times via email, three times through your website and through PayPal to try to get this resolved.

I'd really like to receive these bits, please. I've got a project I really need them for.

Can you please give me the status of this order and when they'll be shipped?

Thanks,
Jacin

At this point, though I'm still attempting to be pleasant, I've stopped expecting a response even though I'm still hoping for one.

On March 13th, I follow up with:

Mark,

I hate to escalate this to a dispute because I really want these bits, but you've been entirely unresponsive to all attempts I've made to get in contact with you to get this resolved.

Please contact me by Friday (March 16, 2012) to let me know the status of my bits order, or I'll have to escalate it.

Thanks,
Jacin

Friday, March 16th came and passed. Can you guess what happened?

He finally responded.

Well, okay, he finally responded after I followed through and escalated it to a dispute.

Well, okay, he finally responded a week after I followed through and escalated it to a dispute.

Well, okay, he finally responded a week after I followed through and escalated it to a dispute and he claimed that the bits order had been 'lost' somewhere in the post, despite his own site showing that he'd never sent them.

Now, I've been a part of the gaming community for a long, long time. I've bought and traded miniatures ranging from Warhammer to HeroClix and cards of all sorts. I've made these deals through an assortment of sites and online communities, as well as through eBay and independently run online companies.

One experience has been consistent throughout: If the person that you've traded/purchased from stops responding to emails once they've gotten your part of the deal (be it money, miniatures, whatever) and, only after escalation through a third-party, claims that their part of the deal got somehow lost in the mail despite no indication that they ever sent it (they 'forgot' to get a tracking number, their site didn't update, etc.), then they're scamming you.

Mark Howard may have a perfectly reasonable explanation for my order 'going missing.' But, the time for him to have given that explanation would have been after my first email in February, not after I had to press the issue via PayPal four weeks later. His complete lack of response or reply, to me, says everything I'd need to know.

I want to try to do something ironic with it, with lots of flowers and such, but I don't have any on hand at the moment.

If you haven't picked one up yet to find out for yourself, let me just say that the new plastic Hero (Wizard/Sorceress/Champion/whatever) kits that Games Workshop is putting out are absolutely outstanding. I've picked up a couple now, and I'm impressed not only with the level of detail offered, but the ease at which they can be converted into other things.

For example, the Nurgle Lord.

You noticed this one ain't human, right?

More photos (and a lot of exposition about the good ol' days of Warhammer) after the jump ...

This conversion is so obvious that I think I've seen it in at least half a dozen other places.

But, that doesn't mean that it wasn't something fun to toy around with when I wanted a distraction from sculpting Centigor (because, it probably doesn't sound like it but, even at units of five, it's a somewhat daunting task ... nevermind, you'll understand when you see them).

The conversion from Nurgle Lord to Pestigor Lord was pretty simple:

Step 1) Get a Nurgle Lord kit.
Step 2) Put it together, leaving off the head.
Step 3) Add an appropriate Beastmen head (you can pick from the Gor or Bestigor sets) with some really big horns.
Step 3a) Re-position the horns to fit with the trio of spiky horn bits he's got sprouting from his shoulder armor.
Step 4) Sculpt on some fur where appropriate (be sure to leave the open wounds visible to make him appear mange-inflicted).
Step 5) Add paint.
Step 6) ...
Step 7) Profit!

(Okay, you can leave off steps six and seven.)

So, why a Pestigor Lord, you ask ... ?

Let me put on my ol' fogey hat for a minute. For those of you too young (either in actual years or hobby years) to remember, there was once a time in Warhammer that the Beasts of Chaos were recognized as, you know, an actual part of the Chaos triumvirate. There were Warriors. There were Daemons. And there were Beasts.

You could, at one point, even mix and match your favorite parts of each army into one unified, cohesive force.

And, to make it even more unified and cohesive, your units that weren't Daemons could take 'marks' representing the different gods of Chaos. So, aside from just having Bloodletters and Juggernauts running alongside your Chaos Warriors, your Warriors and your Beasts could be dedicated followers of Khorne as well.

So it all matched. It was theme-y. And, for many players -- among whom I'd count myself -- being able to theme your army in such a way was a good, good thing.

Now, I'll be honest: I've never been a fan of Nurgle.

Had I played Beasts of Chaos way back then, this is the Chaos god I'd be least likely to have ever aligned them with. (I'm more a Slaanesh guy, to be honest.)

I'm pretty well over the whole 'look, you can see my intestines, and that makes me Nurgle-y' thing -- and, frankly, I was over it about 20 minutes after I saw it the first time -- that Games Workshop (and every other miniatures manufacturer who wants to make something vaguely Nurgle-ish) has going on.

It's overdone to the point hat it just no longer has the shock value it may've had when they first did it. It's cliché.

And, that's not the worst of it. Let's talk, for just a second, about realism.

Look, I get that it's a 'fantasy' world and they're being mystically preserved by the dark god they worship. I understand that. I do.

But, whether you're being protected by some dark magicks or not, having you inner giblets exposed is completely impractical.

Not only can I not imagine any situation in which wading into battle while having your vital organs exposed would be a good idea, but even doing simple things like making coffee in the morning would be nearly impossible without tripping over your intestines which have, once again, slid out of that gaping hole in your gut and mucked up the kitchen floor.

But, I digress ...

The original question was: Why a Pestigor Lord?

The answer to that is this: I thought it would be fun to paint something I wouldn't normally ever approach while, at the same time, keeping it unique.

After all, while I've seen these conversions cropping up once in a while at the Beastmen sites, they're still far rarer than that ol' Nurgle Lord that everyone and their brother has painted, right?

Rumors have been swirling for a few weeks now -- the first I saw them was on Bell of Lost Souls, I believe -- that the reason for the disappearance of the painting and hobby articles from the Games Workshop website and the reason that hobby stores were having issues replenishing stocks of paint was that Games Workshop was getting ready to re-vamp their entire line of paints.

Now, the list of new paint colors has hit the internets.

Here are the rumors thus far (collected from DakkaDakka, Stahly's Tale of Painters and Mr. Saturday's Mumblings):

There will be 144 colors.

Though the paints' names are changing, nothing is leaving.
Blood Red will now be Wild Rider Red, Ultramarine Blue will become Calgar Blue, Skull White will be called White Scar, etc. In other words, unlike Tentacle Pink, the Chaos Black or Skull White name may be gone, but the color will remain.

And, speaking of Tentacle Pink ...

We'll be getting an expansion of colors. Not only is there is a big expansion in the range of greens, there will also be pinks again and a wider variety of purples. And those of you waiting for a Foundation version of plain ol' White won't have to wait much longer.

Even with all of the re-naming, you won't have to guess which paint became which. There will be a White Dwarf with a comparison guide. There'll be no need for eye-balling it.

Paints will be broken into categories now: Bases (think Foundation paints), Layers, Dry (for dry-brushing), Shades (washes), Glazes (thinner washes) and Textures (which appear to be exactly that) and Technical (think varnishes and Liquid Green Stuff).

Prices are not changing! (So, they'll still be -- comparatively -- expensive.)

The pots are not changing.

Along with the new paints, there's going to be a new How To Paint Citadel Miniatures guide, complete with a 90-minute DVD.

I've got to admit, my first thought when all of the painting articles began disappearing and the rumors began swirling about changes to the paints -- particularly in the middle of painting a rather massive army -- I wasn't tremendously excited about the prospect of needing to figure out what paint was closest to what.

But, after having read the latest batch of rumors and seeing that we're not losing anything but, rather, gaining new paints and new colors and new things to make it easier for the average gamers to excel at the painting side of the hobby, I'm actually sort of excited to see what's in store.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7173545738489775135.post-46313676372485218122012-03-14T09:00:00.000-05:002012-03-14T11:12:47.119-05:00Works in Progress: Centigors (Unit #1).With the completion of the Beast King and the Celestial Dragon Monk, I began work on the conversion of my Centigor units. As with all of my units, the Centigor are going to be subject to some heavy conversion work and sculpting.

The difference between these units and the others, however, are that there only five figures in each of these units while some of my others -- the Temple Monk P'nthors (Ungors) and the Ti'Gors of the Golden Fang clan (Gors), most notably -- have as many as 40 figures per unit.

There are currently two units of five centigors in production, and three other units of five centigors. The first (pictured here) features a Standard Bearer (which the other centigor units won't have) and the requisite Ghorros Warhoof.

Take the jump for more ...

In the Mountain Temple half of my army, the Celestial Dragon Monk is represented by a Panda(ren Brewmaster). There's a semi-witty back story that goes along with him that combines elements of Warhammer lore (regarding the Celestial Dragon Monks that reside in temples hidden high in the Mountains of Mourn), my own army's fluff, the story of Po (you know, the Kung Fu Panda?) and the Pandaren Brewmasters of World of Warcraft.

Mix all of that together, and this is what you get.
"So," I hear you asking, "What's up with the alcohol fetish instead of incorporating an acutal, you know, banner on your Battle Standard Bearer?"

That, my friends, is an excellent question. You see, in my twisted imagination, when some epicly heinous villain manages to kill his beloved (you know, a 'Tigress'), our Panda here -- who happens to be a legendary martial artist in <strike>China</strike> Cathay -- leaves the peaceful valley where <strike>he'd worked in his adopted father's noodle shop before becoming the Dragon Warrior</strike> made his home to <strike>retreat</strike> retire to the Celestial Dragon Temple.

There, he drowns his sorrows in a variety of exotic ales and, also, trains the Gray Shaman Tigresses (see what I did there?) of the Beast Kings tribes, helping them to hone their skills in both the martial and mystic arts.

The collection of brews that he has acquired and the potent ales and wines that he himself brews also manage to attract a large number of centigor who are, of course, naturally predisposed to drunkeness (well, and carousing; but that's for a different post) and, aside from the monks who serve at the temple (and also enjoy his beer) and the Gray Shaman Tigresses who are there for training, those centigor who are attracted by the promise of alcoholic beverages make up the bulk of the Celestial Dragon Temple's defenses.

You following so far ... ?

So this guy serves as the Battle Standard Bearer, hopefully making units near him want to stick around a bit longer when the battle gets tough, to imbibe in the post-battle liqours he brings with him.

It's a bit hard to make out in the pictures, but I managed to achieve a great finish on his armor plating (which is supposed to represent the Blackened Plate) with a series of of purple and blue washes over the top of the 'charring' to make it look like truly burnt or heat-damaged metal. Looks brilliant in person. Wish you could see it.
